Winona Laura Horowitz, professionally referred to as Winona Ryder was born in Winona Minnesota. The parents named her Winona for her home town. Michel Horowitz was her father and Cynthia Palmer, his mother was both an author and editors. Ryder's father was born into an ethnically Jewish family. Ryder considers her self Jewish. She has two younger half-siblings, Jubal and Sunyata. Ryder's parents moved her and their children to Mendocino County California when Ryder was seven years old. In those days, there wasn't electricity. Ryder was a consummate read and often spent her time reading books because there was no television. Ryder began taking acting lessons at the American Conservatory Theatre in 1983 aged 12. Lucas, a 1986 film, was her first major role. Ryder was just 15 at the time she was cast.
